What it means
A charge on an invoice line (BG-28), such as a packaging or handling fee, states the amount it is calculated from, the invoice line charge base amount (BT-142). That amount may have at most two decimal places. The check counts the characters written after the decimal point, so 12.50 passes, while 12.500 and 12.5025 fail. It only looks at line charges, not at line discounts.
Why it matters
This is a fatal rule, so the file does not pass validation. The recipient's system or the network will refuse the invoice, and it will not be processed or paid until you send a corrected one.
How to fix it
Open the line that carries the charge and find the base amount of the charge, the figure the charge is calculated from. Round it to two decimals and remove any extra zeros, so 12.500 becomes 12.50. If your invoicing software fills it in from a calculation, such as a unit price with several decimals times a quantity, round the result to two decimals, or ask the software's support to round it in the export.
The rule as published
The allowed maximum number of decimals for the Invoice line charge base amount (BT-142) is 2. Business terms: BT-142
