Understanding ISO 20022 CAMT.054 debit credit notification

CAMT.054 is the ISO 20022 XML notification of account debits and credits, not a complete statement. See what it holds and what Klarbon does with it.

On this page

CAMT.054 is the ISO 20022 XML message for a bank-to-customer debit and credit notification: it reports individual movements on an account, often the single payments that make up one batch entry on the statement. It carries no opening or closing balance, so it is not a complete statement and cannot be reconciled on its own. The statement is CAMT.053.

What is in a CAMT.054 file?

Element Holds
BkToCstmrDbtCdtNtfctn the message: a bank-to-customer debit and credit notification
Ntfctn one notification for one account
Acct the account identifier, such as an IBAN, and its currency
Ntry one entry: amount, credit or debit, booking and value dates
NtryDtls the transactions inside the entry: counterparty, IBAN, remittance information

The message definitions are published by ISO 20022 (ISO 20022), which lists many versions; banks publish their own implementation guidelines on top.

When is CAMT.054 used?

To match incoming payments to invoices, or to break a batch of outgoing payments into its parts. For the full record of an account, use CAMT.053; for intraday reports, CAMT.052.

What can Klarbon do with CAMT.054?

Reading CAMT.054 files and writing camt.054.001.02 from a structured bank file are in beta. Reading PDF statements is not available yet. A notification has no opening or closing balances to reconcile on its own, so compare its entries with the original file before importing. If your importer needs a statement with opening and closing balances, choose CAMT.053 instead.

Frequently asked questions

What is CAMT.054 used for?

To tell an account holder about individual debits or credits, often the single payments behind one batch entry on the statement, so they can be matched to open invoices.

Does a CAMT.054 file have opening and closing balances?

No. A notification lists movements, not balances, so it cannot be reconciled on its own. The statement with balances is CAMT.053.

Can I import CAMT.054 as my bank statement?

Use CAMT.054 only where your software asks for payment notifications. If it requires a statement with balances, use the CAMT.053 version it specifies.
