Australia uses Peppol for e-invoicing, with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) as the Australian Peppol Authority. The ATO describes no obligation for businesses to send e-invoices; the obligations fall on non-corporate Commonwealth entities, which must be able to receive e-invoices and are moving to eInvoicing by default.

This page summarises the ATO's eInvoicing pages and the PINT A-NZ specifications, checked on 5 November 2026. It is not tax advice; your accountant or BAS agent can tell you how the rules apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

Is e-invoicing mandatory for businesses in Australia?

The ATO's pages do not describe an obligation for businesses to send e-invoices. They describe how businesses can register on the Peppol network and encourage them to adopt eInvoicing. The obligations fall on non-corporate Commonwealth entities.

What must Australian Government entities do?

Non-corporate Commonwealth entities have had to be able to receive e-invoices since a 2022 mandate. The ATO guides them to raise e-invoices to 30% of invoices received by 1 July 2026, to enable automated processing and sending of e-invoices by December 2026, and to report progress quarterly.

Can a Peppol e-invoice be a valid tax invoice in Australia?

Yes. According to the ATO, the Peppol eInvoicing standard can be used to issue an invoice that meets the tax invoice requirements. For record keeping, an e-invoice is treated like other digital records.

How do I start e-invoicing in Australia?

Register on the Peppol network through eInvoicing Ready software, an eInvoicing service provider or a free or low-cost online solution. The ATO points to the eInvoicing Ready product register to check your software.
