What it means
Every invoice must contain the scheme identifier of the buyer's electronic address (BT-49-1). The buyer's electronic address (BT-49), for example a Peppol id or a German Leitweg-ID, must say which scheme it belongs to, such as 0204 for a Leitweg-ID, 0208 for a Belgian company number or EM for an email address.
Why it matters
An identifier means nothing without the list it comes from: the same digits can be a VAT number, a company number or a GLN. The scheme tells the recipient's software how to read it, so an identifier without one is rejected.
How to fix it
Enter the customer's electronic address together with its type on the customer record, as the customer gave it to you, for example their Leitweg-ID with scheme 0204. If you build the XML yourself, add the schemeID attribute to cbc:EndpointID (UBL) or ram:URIID (CII) of the buyer.
The rule as published
The Buyer electronic address (BT-49) shall have a Scheme identifier. Business terms: BT-49
