Understanding QuickBooks Web Connect

QBO is a QuickBooks Web Connect bank transaction download in Intuit's OFX programme. Compare it with QFX and OFX and see why a bank ID is needed.

A QBO file is a QuickBooks Web Connect download: the transactions of a bank account, saved from the bank's website and imported into QuickBooks. It belongs to Intuit's OFX programme, like Quicken's QFX, and carries the bank's Intuit identifier, so a bank needs an agreement with Intuit to offer it. QuickBooks Web Connect reads only .qbo files. Klarbon support is planned, not available yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is a QBO file?

A QuickBooks Web Connect file. You download it from your bank's website and import it into QuickBooks Desktop or QuickBooks Online. It holds the account's transactions for the chosen dates.

What is the difference between QBO and QFX?

Both are Web Connect downloads in Intuit's OFX programme. A .qbo file is for QuickBooks and a .qfx file is for Quicken. Each carries the bank's Intuit identifier, so a bank needs an agreement with Intuit to offer them.

Why does QuickBooks reject my QBO file?

Common causes are a file that was not downloaded directly from the bank, an incomplete download, a bank that has stopped offering Web Connect, or an account not set up for it. Intuit's help suggests asking the bank in those cases.

Do I need to sign in to import a QBO file?

In QuickBooks Desktop, yes. Intuit's help says importing Web Connect files requires signing in to your Intuit account within QuickBooks Desktop.
