Understanding DATEV-Format CSV

DATEV-Format is a CSV format for booking batches and master data shared by German bookkeeping software and tax advisers. See what the file needs.

On this page

The DATEV-Format is the CSV format of DATEV, the German accounting software provider, for exchanging booking batches (Buchungsstapel) and master data. Bookkeeping programs export it so a tax adviser can import the bookings into DATEV's accounting software, and DATEV's own programs export it as files named DTVF_*.csv. A file starts with a header line describing the batch, then one booking per line.

What is in a DATEV booking batch?

A header line with details such as the format version, the batch name and the period, a line of column names, then the bookings: amount, debit or credit, account and contra account, date, document number and text. The full description is on the DATEV Developer Portal (in German), and DATEV's knowledge base explains the export from its accounting programs (DATEV, in German).

Frequently asked questions

Why does my tax adviser want a DATEV export?

Many German tax advisers work in DATEV's accounting programs. A booking batch in the DATEV-Format can be imported there without retyping.

Can a DATEV export be made from an invoice alone?

Not safely. A booking needs the accounts from the chart of accounts in use, such as SKR03 or SKR04, and the financial year, which an invoice does not say.

Can Klarbon write the DATEV-Format?

No, not today. Klarbon's CSV export of a bank statement lists transactions; it is not a DATEV booking batch.
