What it means
The buyer contact point (BT-56) is the person or department at the buyer that the invoice is meant for. In the file the contact block can hold a person's name and a department name. The check fails when both are filled in.
Why it matters
The standard has a single field for the contact point. When both are present, software reading the file keeps one and may drop the other. The file is still accepted.
How to fix it
In your invoicing software, open the customer record or the buyer details on the invoice and fill in either a person or a department. Keep the one the buyer gave you for invoices. It is worth fixing if the buyer routes invoices internally by this contact.
The rule as published
Only one BT-56 element is allowed on an invoice. Business terms: BT-56
