Understanding ELSTER tax data

ELSTER is Germany's electronic tax submission system. Software uses the free ERiC library to check and send data. See how it differs from an e-invoice.

On this page

ELSTER is the German tax administration's system for submitting tax data electronically, such as VAT returns. Tax, finance and payroll software connects through ERiC, the ELSTER Rich Client: a C library the administration provides free of charge, which checks the data for plausibility and sends it encrypted. The tax software provides the user interface. ELSTER carries tax filings, not invoices.

How does ELSTER work for software?

Software makers download ERiC and the interface descriptions from ELSTER's developer area and build their own user interface around it (ELSTER, in German). The library is updated regularly, so software has to keep up with new releases.
