Understanding EANCOM INVOIC

EANCOM INVOIC is GS1's UN/EDIFACT invoice subset for retail EDI with GTINs and GLNs. Read about EANCOM 2002 Syntax 4 and how it differs from EDIFACT.

On this page

EANCOM INVOIC is the GS1 subset of the UN/EDIFACT invoice message, used mainly in retail EDI. It keeps only the elements business applications need and identifies products by GTIN and parties by Global Location Number (GLN). EANCOM 2002 Syntax 4 is based on EDIFACT directory D.01B, with version code EAN011 for INVOIC in the message header. Klarbon support is planned, not available yet.

Frequently asked questions

What is EANCOM?

The GS1 subset of UN/EDIFACT. It keeps only the message elements that business applications need and the syntax requires, and leaves out optional elements that GS1 users do not use.

How do I recognise an EANCOM invoice?

The UNH segment carries INVOIC, version D, release 01B, agency UN and the GS1 code EAN011, the EANCOM version of the invoice message.

Why does EANCOM use GTINs and GLNs?

EANCOM ties EDIFACT to the GS1 identification standards. Products are identified by GTIN, the number behind the barcode, and parties and locations by Global Location Number (GLN).

Is EANCOM free to use?

GS1 publishes the EANCOM manuals, but national GS1 organisations and trading partners add their own guides, and code lists may have their own terms. Check what your trading partner and GS1 organisation require.
